Isla Saona Excursion from Bayahibe: What to Know Before You Go

Crystal-clear turquoise water and white sand beach on Isla Saona, Dominican Republic

What Is Isla Saona?

Isla Saona is a protected island off the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic, part of the Parque Nacional del Este. It's about 22 km long, fringed with white-sand beaches and lined with coconut palms. The water is that specific shade of turquoise that makes people question whether it's real.

It's also one of the most popular day trips in the country — and for good reason. If you're staying in Bayahibe or Dominicus, you're in the best possible location for it.

How the Excursion Works

Most Saona excursions follow a similar structure:

  1. Pickup from your hotel or meet at the Bayahibe pier
  2. Speedboat or catamaran ride to the island (30–45 minutes)
  3. Time on Isla Saona — beach, lunch, swimming
  4. Natural pool stop on the return journey — a shallow sandbar where you can stand waist-deep surrounded by sea stars
  5. Return to Bayahibe by late afternoon

Catamaran trips tend to be more of a party experience (music, open bar). Speedboat trips are faster and quieter. If you want a calmer day, ask specifically for a smaller group or speedboat option.

What to Actually Bring

Tour operators always say "just bring yourself," but you'll be happier if you also bring:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the island is inside a national park, and regular sunscreen is harmful to the ecosystem
  • A dry bag — boats splash, and you don't want a wet phone
  • Cash — USD and Dominican pesos both work for tips, extras, and drinks beyond what's included
  • Your own snorkel gear — if you care about hygiene, bring yours; shared gear is available but heavily used
  • Water shoes — some beach entries are rocky

Honest Expectations

Saona is genuinely beautiful, but a few things are worth knowing:

  • It gets crowded. You won't have the beach to yourself — dozens of tour boats arrive daily. Go early and stake out your spot.
  • The natural pool is worth it. It's usually the highlight of the trip for most people. The starfish are wild (don't pick them up — it's harmful and illegal in the park).
  • Lunch is usually buffet-style and included, but quality varies. Manage expectations.
  • The party boat is loud. If you want a peaceful day, ask your operator about smaller group options — they exist.

Getting to Bayahibe First

Isla Saona excursions depart from Bayahibe, which means your first step is getting there. If you're flying into Punta Cana (PUJ), the drive is about 1 hour south. From Santo Domingo (SDQ), it's roughly 1.5 hours east.

Book your transfer to Bayahibe and we'll get you there in time for your morning departure — flight monitoring included, so delays don't throw off your plans.
