Uber from Punta Cana to Bayahibe, Dominicus or La Romana: What You Need to Know

Uber operates in parts of the Dominican Republic, including at Punta Cana International Airport. For short trips around Punta Cana or Bávaro, it's a perfectly reasonable option. For the longer run down the coast to Bayahibe, Dominicus, or La Romana — it's more complicated, and for most groups with luggage, it's the wrong tool for the job.
Here's the honest breakdown.
The Route: Bayahibe, Dominicus and La Romana
All three destinations sit along the same stretch of coast, roughly an hour southwest of PUJ.
Bayahibe is a small fishing village and the gateway to Isla Saona. Most travelers here are at smaller boutique hotels or villas rather than large all-inclusives.
Dominicus (Playa Dominicus) is home to a cluster of large all-inclusive resorts — Catalonia Bayahibe, Viva Dominicus, Dreams Dominicus — and shares the same travel distance and transfer price as Bayahibe ($110).
La Romana is a mid-sized city about 10 minutes further west. It's the base for Casa de Campo and several other upscale properties. Transfer price from PUJ runs $120.
All three are well outside Uber's reliable coverage zone. Everything below applies equally to any of them.
Uber at PUJ: How It Actually Works
You can't hail an Uber from the curb at arrivals. After landing, you'll need to:
- Connect to the airport's free WiFi (your data roaming may not work)
- Open the app and request a ride to your destination
- Walk to the designated pickup area — not the main arrivals exit
That last part matters if you've just landed with four suitcases and haven't slept. The pickup zone is a short walk, but it's still a walk through a busy airport with your bags.
There's a further complication: because of longstanding tensions between Uber and local taxi associations, many drivers avoid the arrivals bay entirely. Travelers regularly report drivers asking them to walk out to the parking lot or a nearby side road before they'll pull up. When a driver does accept, wait times of 20–45 minutes are common — even during the day.
The Luggage Problem
This is where most travelers get caught out.
UberX in the Dominican Republic runs on micro cars and compact sedans. According to Uber's official PUJ airport page, luggage is capped based on how many passengers are in the car:
- 4 passengers: no luggage accepted
- 3 passengers: maximum 2 suitcases
That means a family of four with one bag each — a completely normal travel setup — cannot take a single Uber. You'd need to split into two cars, or leave bags behind.
Your options at that point:
- Book two Ubers (now you're paying double, and coordinating two cars)
- Find another solution on the spot, after a long flight
The Cancellation Risk on Long Routes
The Bayahibe and Dominicus resorts are around an hour from PUJ by road. La Romana is similar. That's a long haul for an Uber driver, and some decline it — either by cancelling after accepting, or by negotiating a higher price in person when they see the destination.
There's no recourse when this happens. You're back to square one, in an unfamiliar airport, tired, with luggage.
Late-night arrivals are especially risky. Coverage at PUJ drops significantly after 10 PM — fewer drivers are active, and cancellations spike. If your flight lands late, Uber should not be your plan A.
The return trip is even harder. Uber coverage in Bayahibe, Dominicus, and La Romana is thin — very few drivers operate in these areas, so there's no guarantee anyone will accept your request. Since the ride back to Punta Cana is over an hour, expect drivers to either cancel outright or try to negotiate a higher fare in person. Don't count on Uber for long-distance rides in either direction.
Price Comparison
| Route | Uber (UberX) | HolaBayahibe |
|---|---|---|
| PUJ → Bayahibe / Dominicus | ~$80–100 | $110 |
| PUJ → La Romana | ~$90–110 | $120 |
The Uber price looks lower — but only if you can actually use it. For any group traveling with normal vacation luggage, the math changes fast once you need two cars.
| What you get | Uber (UberX) | HolaBayahibe |
|---|---|---|
| 4 passengers + luggage | ❌ Not possible | ✅ Included |
| 3 passengers + 2 bags | ✅ Maximum allowed | ✅ No problem |
| Driver waiting at arrivals | ❌ You find them | ✅ Name sign in hand |
| Price fixed before you land | ❌ Can surge | ✅ Always |
| Driver who knows your resort | ❌ Varies | ✅ Always |
What Makes a Private Transfer Different
When you book with us, your driver is already at the arrivals hall when your flight lands — name sign in hand, familiar with every resort and hotel in Bayahibe, Dominicus, and La Romana. The price is set when you book, not when you get in the car. The vehicle has room for your group and your bags.
Our drivers live and work in the Bayahibe area. They know the roads, the resorts, the shortcuts, and which gate your hotel actually uses. That's not something the Uber app can give you.
If you're traveling solo or as a couple with light bags, Uber from PUJ is worth trying. If you're a family or group with normal vacation luggage, book a transfer in advance and skip the uncertainty.
